Firearm Harm Prevention 2.0: Unlocking the Potential and Challenges of AI and Social Media Innovations
Professor Patton has spent the last decade co-designing research studies that detect trauma and preempt violence on social media. Patton created the Contextual Analysis of Social Media (CASM) approach to center and privilege culture, context, and inclusion in machine learning and computer vision analysis to identify expressions of aggression, grief and loss, and substance use in the Twitter post of self-identified gang-involved youth. In his talk, Professor Patton will unlock the untapped potential of collaboration between social media, artificial intelligence (AI), and firearm harm prevention. Dr. Patton will describe the power of collective action by harnessing the capabilities of social media platforms and AI technologies. Discover how these digital tools can facilitate information sharing, community engagement, and early detection of potential threats while paying close attention to and developing solutions for the potential ethical challenges of deploying AI in community violence contexts.
